Historical Commentaries

Scholarly Analysis and Interpretation.

And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies,.... Next followed the standard of the camp of Ephraim, under which were Manasseh and Benjamin, Numbers 10:23,
and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud; over whom were the same captains, as in Numbers 2:18.

Behind the sacred things came the banners of Ephraim, with Manasseh and Benjamin (see Numbers 2:18-24), and Daniel with Asher and Naphtali (Numbers 2:25-31); so that the camp of Daniel was the "collector of all the camps according to their hosts," i.e., formed that division of the army which kept the hosts together.
